As China accelerates its path toward ecological modernization, artificial intelligence (AI) and big data are playing an increasingly vital role in improving environmental monitoring and governance. From air quality management to wastewater treatment, cutting-edge technologies are helping to build a cleaner and more sustainable future.

In Shijiazhuang’s Luquan District, an AI-powered air quality monitoring platform has been launched to enhance the precision of pollution tracing and response efficiency. By integrating meteorological, traffic, enterprise, and radar data, the system enables real-time image recognition, source detection, flow analysis, and intelligent dispatching. The smart platform was jointly developed by Shanshui Zhishuan (Hebei) Technology Co., Ltd. and several leading research institutes, and was officially introduced during the 2024 “Dual Carbon” Smart Environmental AI Model Forum.

AI’s footprint extends beyond air monitoring. According to Academician Hou Li’an of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, wastewater treatment is the world’s fifth-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. He believes AI algorithms, combined with big data and molecular detection techniques, could significantly enhance the identification and management of pollutants, while improving operational efficiency.

Further illustrating the shift toward intelligent governance, officials from Shandong, Tianjin, and other regions highlighted how big data platforms have become indispensable for environmental enforcement. By comparing real-time production and emission data, authorities can swiftly detect anomalies, trace potential violations, and intervene effectively — reducing the need for manual site inspections.

From smart pollution tracing to precision enforcement, AI and digital tools are reshaping China’s environmental landscape. These innovations not only strengthen environmental protection but also support the country’s green development and carbon neutrality ambitions.
